PREAMBLE

The Gurung (Tamu) Culture Forum-UK was founded in 2012 to preserve the heritage of the Gurung people. We, the Gurung (Tamu) people are a prominent and proud race from the slopes of the Annapurna Himalayan Range in Central Nepal. The ancestors of the Gurungs migrated out from the Gandaki Basin in search of jobs and education, and have settled all over Nepal. Many have since moved on to India, Hong Kong, United Kingdom (UK), America, Japan, Australia, Canada, Europe and other countries. Despite this, the Gurung (Tamu) Diaspora is closely-knit by family and kinship ties, as communities and association work to preserve its indigenous heritage and culture. Because they have come from various parts of Nepal, where the culture and customs of the Gurung people vary from place to place, there is a need to bring them together under one common Tamu identity. These differences come to the fore mainly when international Tamu communities from various regions and villages gather together. The Gurung (Tamu) people mark births, marriages, deaths as well as festivals such as Tamu Lhochhar/Lhosar, Pitri Puja, Tohte, Dashain and Tihar with various customs.

In order to forge unity through this diversity, the Gurung (Tamu) Cultural Forum-UK, Tamu Dhee Association UK (TDUK) and Tamu Pye Lhu Sangh UK (TPLS UK) are working together to set a more standard set of cultural norms, customs and traditions that accommodate all 73 Gurung (Tamu) organisations in the UK. The aim is to unify and preserve a more appropriate and pragmatic approach to these practices in the UK and globally. The Gurung (Tamu) organisations in the UK understand that while trying to standardize and build a more flexible set of culture and customs, it is also important to preserve them and stem the erosion of this culture.

AIM

The main aim of Gurung (Tamu) Culture and Customs Forum-UK’s first consultation meeting held in March 2017 was to discuss and compile a Gurung Trilingual Book entitled ‘‘Tamu Heritage Book’’ – the Culture, Language and Civilisation of the Gurung people. This piece of work was to be called Project Millennium – a flagship undertaking to preserve and maintain the Gurung (Tamu) culture.

The book will be in Gurung dialect (only the most essential words, phrases and sentences of everyday use), Nepali and English language and will help Tamu people worldwide to understand and identify with the Gurung history and culture, and work in its conservation so that future descendants can benefit.

Endorsed by Captain Raju Lem Tamu Project Director And Forum Board of  Council Chair Major Lalbdr Kone Tamu.

Tamu Cultural and Customs Forum UK Introduction

Namaste and Welcome to all the Tamus to the 2017 UK Tamu Culture and Customs Forum !

The main aim of this Gurung (Tamu) Culture and Customs Forum is to preserve and maintain our Gurung cultures by producing a standardized tri-language book, comprising of Gurung dilect, Nepali and English. This tri-language book will help us understand and preserve our Gurung history and cultures and therefore will be immensely beneficial for our future decendants for generations and generations to come.

We, Tamus are a very prominent and proud race originating mainly from the foothills of the Machapuchre and Annapurna Mountain ranges in the mid-western region of Nepal. Our ancelstors migrated outwards from the central Gandaki region moving north, south, east and west into all corners of Nepal. In time our forefathers moved out of their ancestral villages into towns and cities in search of better health, education and economic opportunities. This led onto further migration internationally into countries such as UK, Hong Kong, South Korea, USA, Canada, Japan, Autralia, the Middle East and various other countries. All along this journey, we have always stayed together through our bond as Tamus and formed strong communities and assoications that are always growing.

Our amalgamation together from different regions and villages in Nepal has meant that our cuture and customs are variable from one community to the next. These differences oten come to the fore especially in international Tamu Communities such as ours where there are representations from many different regions and villages. Our customs play a major role in many important events such as : birth, marriage, death rituals as well as celebrations like Tamu Lhochhar or (Lhosar, Lhotuba), Pirti Puja, Tohte, Dashain and Tihar etc.Taking these points into consideration, Tamu Dhee UK (TDUK) & Tamu Pye Lhu Sangh UK (TPLSUK) are working towards unifying and creating a more standardized set of customs and traditions that reflect and accommodate all Tamu Samajes as well as being suitably flexible to fit in with the busy lifestyle of the UK and its laws. Tamu Dhee UK and Tamu Pye Lhu Sangh Uk are of the view that while trying to establish a more flexible and unified set of customs and traditions, it is also equally important to preserve them by not allowing them to diminish. Therefore, all Gurungs (Tamus) are kindly requested to support this worthy cause.
